When two friends trade places for a week in Your Place or Mine, they get an unexpected surprise and a twist in their relationship. Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher star in this new Netflix rom-com. With two big names in the leads, and more in the supporting cast, is this movie worth your time? Here's the review with all the info on the story and cast.

What is the Plot of Your Place or Mine

Debbie (Reese Witherspoon) and Peter (Ashton Kutcher) have been friends for 20 years. They met 20 years ago when they had a one night stand. Ever since, they have been best friends who talk on the phone every day. She lives in Los Angeles with her son and he lives in New York City.

Twenty years ago they both had dreams of making it big in the literary world. She wanted to be an editor and he wanted to be a writer. But as a single mother of a child with health issues, she walked away from that career path and instead settled for a steady job that paid well.

Peter may not have followed his dream of becoming a writer, but he hit it big in business none the less. He helps clients fix their businesses and he has made a fortune doing so. When Debbie attends a one week course in New York, the plan is for her to stay with Peter and they can finally hang out together in person. But that plan goes awry when Debbie's babysitter cancels on her the day before her trip.

With no one else available to step up, Debbie decides to cancel her trip and she'll just do it next year. But instead, Peter surprises Debbie by flying across the country to watch Jack (Wesley Kimmel) while she is away. To say that this over-protective mother isn't just a littler nervous to leave her 12-year old son with Peter is an understatement. But she jumps on the opportunity to head to New York and to spread her wings in the big apple.

Your Place or Mine Cast

In addition to Reese and Ashton, Your Place or Mine also has a lot of familiar faces in the supporting cast. My favorite is Jesse Williams as Theo. Theo is a publisher in NYC who Debbie strikes up a relationship with. For Grey's Anatomy fans who miss seeing Jesse on the show, this is a great opportunity to see him on TV again. And of course he is as charming, smart, and handsome as ever. OK yes, clearly I have a thing for him and I was beyond thrilled to see him again.

Steve Zahn and Tig Notaro play Debbie's neighbor and friend, respectively. Their characters don't have a lot to offer to the story, and I feel like they were both introduced to add a little comic relief to the plot. Not that the movie needed that, I just think that was the role for those two characters.

Your Place or Mine Review

When I saw Reese, Ashton, and Tig making the rounds promoting the movie, I was really looking forward to it. But I have to admit, I was also skeptical about the movie. There were a couple of reasons why I was nervous about the movie. First, the plot. With the characters having a long-distance relationship and then swapping houses for a week, Reese and Ashton would never really be on screen together.

My second red flag for the movie were the clips that they showed on TV during interviews. I was watching Tig in an interview and the clip they showed was not funny. Now she is a very funny comedian, so if they can't come up with a decent clip to share then it is a red flag that the humor just isn't there.

Your Place or Mine debuted on Netflix on February 10, 2023 and I was really looking forward to it. So after a long week, on Friday I cozied up on the couch to Netflix and chill. I am a big Reese Witherspoon fan. She has been on such a roll the last few years with the quality shows she has been a part of on TV as an actress and producer. Her production company has been a part of so many great shows and movies so I figured that this movie had to be a hit.

Should You Watch Your Place or Mine

Your Place or Mine is not terrible, but it certainly is not a hit. The story is 100% predictable, but truthfully most rom-coms are. But that's OK. When I watch a rom-com, or a Hallmark movie I watch it because I want something light and enjoyable. I want to escape from the stress of the real world, and the depressing stories in the News. So from that perspective, this movie is a winnter.

This movie is light and checks off many of the boxes. The problem is that for a rom-com to be successful you have to be rooting for the couple to get together, and for there to be a spark that makes it obvious that they are destined to be together. The problem with Your Place or Mine is that it lacks that spark.

Those red flags that I mentioned above turned out to be very real. When the romantic leads have 3,000 miles separating them and they are never physically together, it is hard to build the chemistry needed to really sell the relationship. I completely got Debbie and Peter as best friends. That was the vibe theirs characters gave off and that was where I wanted them to stay. I didn't see the connection between the two so it was hard to get behind the movie.

The Verdict: There are better rom-coms to watch. Here's the way I look at Your Place or Mine. As a TV rom-com is is acceptable. Nothing special, nothing memorable, and nothing that I need to watch again. But, an enjoyable movie none the less.

But as a Netflix movie worthy of being on the big screen, this move fails. I certainly would not have gone out to the movie theatre to watch this movie, so if you're looking for a rom-com worthy of that acclaim, this movie will definitely leave you disappointed.

Your Place or Mine Alternative

Your Place or Mine is cute and I'd watch it for Reese. As a single mother myself I can relate to the struggles Debbie faces, and I appreciate the sacrifice she made in her career. The movie is light and for those looking for a movie to brighten-up their night, this may be the escape you need. But if you're looking for a better rom-com with ties to Reese, her Hello Sunshine production company produced one of my favorite Christmas movies of 2022. It was Something From Tiffany's on Amazon Prime. I would watch that one again anyday!
