A Christmas Spark Movie Review

Jane Seymour stars in the Lifetime movie A Christmas Spark. When a mother travels to spend the holidays with her daughter, she ends-up getting more than she bargained for. Will she let love into her life again and can she let go of her traditions and make room for new ones?

A Synopsis of A Christmas Spark

Molly (Jane Seymour) is a widow who is stuck in a rut and not really living life. She's going through the motions, but she doesn't have the same spark that she had before losing her husband. She follows the same traditions every year because she feels that it is how she honors and remembers her husband. But she isn't doing anything for herself, and she isn't willing to give new things a try, like going on a trip with her girlfriends.

When Molly's daughter Kristen and her family can't make it for Christmas as planned, Molly heads to their house in New Hampshire instead. It may not have been part of her plan, but the change does her good. Of course it doesn't hurt that she meets Hank (Joe Lando), the town's most eligible bachelor.

When the town is in need of a new Director for the Christmas show, Molly steps up and volunteers. The local women who help run the event convince her that the only way it will be a success is if Hank plays Santa. So she reluctantly recruits him for the job. And when the set and costumes for the show get ruined in a water leak, Molly and Hank work together to write a new play.

A Synopsis of A Christmas Spark

The Verdict: A Mixed-Bag. I really wanted to like A Christmas Spark, but it fell a little flat for me. Of course Jane Seymour is amazing in the role and I loved seeing her on TV again. I also think it's nice that Lifetime focused on a storyline for someone who is a little older. There's room for love at all ages and it's nice when a Christmas movie captures that.

The whole point of the movie is just what the title says, Molly finds a A Christmas Spark. And, her spark for life again. Hank is a writer and world traveler who is more of a free-spirit. He helps Molly see that living our lives doesn't mean carrying on the same traditions year after year. That there's room in our lives, and our hearts, to make room for new traditions. Molly ultimately accepts this too and she's able to move on and make some important changes in her life. She knows that she has to take the leap and start living for herself, instead of grieving for her husband.

I guess why I consider it a mixed-bag is because it just didn't move me the way I thought it would. Maybe it's because some of the funniest scenes were all played in the previews that I saw for weeks on end. Or, maybe it's because I didn't feel much of a spark between Molly and Hank. Yes, of course they are both gorgeous and I can see how they would be drawn to each other. But, I just felt like the movie and the relationship needed a lot more oomph to make it exciting.

If you are a Jane Seymour fan then I would say go ahead and watch A Christmas Spark. I think you'll enjoy her performance. She hasn't changed a bit in all these years, so maybe there's hope for us all to age so gracefully. And for people who used to watch Jane and Joe in Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, you may appreciate the movie more than I did. I never watched the show, so I don't have that previous relationship in my head to draw upon. I just have how they were together in A Christmas Spark and to me it was more of a fizzle than a spark.
